PHASE I - Chronic Kidney Disease

Quick Description:  The kidneys filter waste and excess fluid from the blood. As kidneys fail, waste builds up. Symptoms develop slowly and aren't specific to the disease. Some people have no symptoms at all and are diagnosed by a lab test.

Main Inclusion Criteria:

  • Male or female over 18 years old
  • Mild Chronic Kidney Disease
  • Moderate Chronic Kidney Disease
  • Severe Chronic Kidney Disease
  • Healthy people

Public Health Alert

The CDC has issued an alert for travel to areas where Zika virus is spreading, which now includes Miami-Dade County, Florida. Travelers who are pregnant or considering pregnancy should consult a doctor.

What is Zika?

Quick Description:  In most cases, there are no symptoms. In a few cases, Zika can trigger paralysis (Guillain-Barre Syndrome). In pregnant women, it may cause subsequent birth defects. When present, symptoms are mild and last less than a week. They include fever, rash, joint pain, and red eyes. There's no vaccine or specific treatment. Instead the focus is on relieving symptoms and includes rest, rehydration, and acetaminophen for fever and pain. Aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen should be avoided.

Main Inclusion Criteria:

  • All persons over 18 years old willing to provide blood samples to help find a vaccine or a cure against Zika virus
